7. Contact lenses handling, insertion and removal instructions

General Tips

  • Hands should be washed and thoroughly rinsed before handling lenses.
  • A soap that is free of oils, lotions or perfumes is recommended.
  • Hands should be dried with a lint–free towel.
  • Use finger tips to handle lens (avoid finger nails and sharp objects).
  • Check to ensure lens is clean and damage–free.
  •
  • At the end of the wearing period, remove and discard the lens.
  •
  • Always keep a pair of spare lenses or back-up glasses with you.

How to Insert Your Contact Lenses

  • Place the clean "right" lens on the tip of the index or middle finger of your dominant hand (if you're right-handed this would be your right hand), and pull down the lower lid with the middle or ring finger of the same hand. Use your other hand to hold the upper lid firmly open.
  • Look directly at the lens or look directly into a mirror and place the lens directly on the cornea (the large colour circle in the centre of your eye).
  • Slowly release your hold on the lid. If there are any air bubbles beneath the lens, close your eye, and with the eye closed, roll the eye gently. Another way of getting rid of air bubbles is to massage the lids very lightly. Under no condition, however, should you rub your eyes.

Checking the Lenses

After you have successfully inserted your lenses, you should ask yourself:

  • Can I see well?
  • How do the lenses feel on my eyes?
  • How do my eyes look?

If after placement of the contact lens, your vision is blurred, check for the following:

  • The lens is not centered on the eye (see “Centering the Lens”).
  • If the lens is centered, remove the lens (see “Removing Your Lenses”) and check for the following: 1.Cosmetics or oils on the lens. Please dispose of the lens and insert a new fresh lens. 2.The lens is on the wrong eye. 3.The lens is inside out (it would also not be as comfortable as normal). See “How to Insert Your Contact Lenses”.

If your vision is still blurred after checking the above possibilities, remove both contact lenses and consult your Eye Care Professional.

Centering the Lens

A lens, which is on the center of your eye, will very rarely move onto the white part of the eye during wear. This, however, can occur if insertion and removal procedures are not performed properly. To center a lens, follow either of these procedures: Close your eyelids and gently massage the lens into place through the closed lids or gently move the off-centered lens onto the center of your eye while the eye is opened using finger pressure on the edge of the upper lid or lower lid.

Removing Your Lenses

Look up. With your middle finger, hold down your lower lid. Use forefinger to slide lens to lower part of eye. Pinch lens with thumb and forefinger and remove without excessively folding the lens.

CAUTION: Always be sure the lens is in the center of your eye before attempting to remove it. Determine this by covering the other eye. If your vision is blurred, the lens is either on the white part of the eye or it is not on the eye at all. To locate the lens, inspect the upper area of the eye by looking down into a mirror while pulling the upper lid up. Then inspect the lower area by pulling the lower lid down.

Disinfection /Soaking Lens

Always clean and disinfect the same lens first to avoid mix-ups. Clean and disinfect your lenses strictly following the instructions on your solution bottle or as directed by your optometrist.

If Lenses Feel Dry

Re-wet with your solution them follow the disinfection/soaking step above. If wearing daily disposable lenses, remove and discard the lenses and open and insert a new pair as above.
